Abstract

We aim through this research paper to uncover the deep structure of Assia Djebar’s novel “Love, Fantasia” by tracing the cultural patterns that remain hidden during the narrative yet guide its meanings. These include the religious pattern, the revolutionary pattern, the linguistic pattern, and the popular pattern. We relied on precise textual evidence and analyzed it in an attempt to reveal the extent of its connection to these patterns and its expression of them, while drawing on the views of critics who have addressed the concept of “pattern” in their readings, with the aim of uncovering the implicit ideological and cultural dimensions. Based on this, we sought to answer key questions, most notably: What are the dominant patterns in this novel? What is the purpose of using these patterns in the writing process? And how are the cultural patterns manifested in the novel?
