The essence of art used by Hegel

Abstract

This article is an attempt to introduce Hegel’s philosophy of art, undoubtedly a prestigious philosophy of the modern age because it has deep had influence not only on the most important theoreticians of art but on writers and artists themselves as well. It treats of the finality of art, if finality there is, and of the various procedures advanced by Hegel. To all intents and purposes Hegel, with great knowledge, approached the question with perspicacity and from all sides, teleological and practical.

                 In terms of teleology, Hegel shows that art could not have another end than itself, or the search for a representation of truth. From the practical standpoint Hegel suffices himself with pointing in some directions but expands of the qualities an artist should have before embarking on any artistic endeavour. He insists on imagination, style, originality, manner and objectivity, i.e. to achieve the reconciliation of all existing antagonisms.
