This study deals with the definition of the picaresque novel by excavating its linguistic and terminological origins; it presents its characteristics with particular attention to its connection with the biographical novel. The study also reveals the manifestations of this sub-genre in Moroccan novelist
Mohamed Choukri’s novel, Bread Alone (El khobz elhafi), taking as a starting point the novelist’s own declaration of belonging to thelong tradition of this novelistic form.
