The study aims to develop a scientific vision for renewing the teaching of Arabic in qualitative higher education by investing functional grammar and insights from contemporary linguistics.
It adopts a descriptive-analytical approach that critically revisits the grammatical and linguistic heritage, presents the foundations of Ahmed Al-Mutawakkil’s functional grammar, and applies them to coordination phenomena.
The central question concerns how far modern linguistic theories, especially functional grammar, can help overcome difficulties in teaching Arabic grammar to native university students.
The article asks how Arabic language curricula at university can integrate functional grammar and how Arabic grammar can be updated to meet the requirements of a modern functional approach and enhance communicative competence.
