Abstract

Theoretically, assimilation is the colonial policy most in line with the reality of a colony like Algeria. The annexation of Algeria to France by the ordinance of July 22, 1834, did not result in a legislative unity (and thus an assimilation) between "the two Frances". In fact, being French in Algeria does not mean enjoying all the rights of the citizen, because the interpretation of the law has always been subordinated to political interests. Also Algeria is organized so that it is the European element that determines everything and has master of all things. Sometimes it is not enough to understand why colonial policies are based only on forms of inequality. Here is an example of a phrase that is heavy with meaning.
